Historic Brooklyn church grants $60,000 to neighborhood nonprofits
On Sunday, February 10, 2008 the Concord Baptist Church of Christ will present grants totaling $60,000 to nine ommunity service organizations that serve Central Brooklyn youth and residents. The awards will be disbursed through the Concord Baptist Christ Fund, the church’s endowed grant-making arm. The presentation will take place during orning worship service at 10:00 a.m. at the Concord Baptist Church of Church located at 833 Marcy Avenue (formerly Marcy ve.) in the Bedford Stuyvesant community of Brooklyn New York.
“Bedford Stuyvesant is a community in the midst of exciting revitalization, says Concord’s Senior Pastor, Dr. Gary V. impson. “Therefore, now, more than ever, it is crucial that organizations with deep roots and honorable interests in this community be supported and encouraged.”
“We are honored to be able to tangibly affect organizations doing good work in our community,” comments Concord hrist Fund Board of Governors Chair, Lisa A. Bing. “By providing financial resources to groups working locally that may otherwise be difficult or impossible to attain, the Christ Fund continues a legacy of inspired giving by our congregation, and will hopefully draw attention to the vast opportunities for community uplift and development in the Central Brooklyn area.” Bing is a third generation Concord member and principle of Bing Consulting Group, Inc.
2008 Christ Fund grant recipients are dynamic and diverse in their approaches to community uplift and empowerment.

Brooklyn Community Access Television/BCAT - in support of the expansion of network programming covering diverse Brooklyn neighborhoods.
Organizations receiving grants of $5,000 each:
Girls for Gender Equity – to underwrite youth development projects for over 600 girls and boys in Brooklyn public schools;

“The work of our grantee organizations is directly in line with the mission of the Concord Baptist Church and the Concord Christ Fund. We support projects and organizations that work to uplift Brooklyn communities,” says Simpson. “The existence and growth of these organizations increases our ability to positively impact our neighborhoods.”
The Concord Baptist Church of Christ was founded in 1847 and its members have been active in important social movements in the United States since the Abolitionist Movement. Concord’s outreach in the Bedford-Stuyvesant community is vast and includes the Concord Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center, the Concord Baptist Elementary School and Concord Home Services for the Elderly.
The Concord Christ Fund was established in 1988 by the largely African-American working class congregation to support the uplift of Bedford Stuyvesant and Central Brooklyn. Since its founding, The Concord Christ Fund has made grants nearing a million dollars to worthy community projects.
