| The Concord Family Services |
Concord Family Services is a culturally sensitive community-based agency providing a wide range of family services and youth/community development programs to the Bedford-Stuyvesant community. The agency was incorporated in 1990 in response to a growing community need for comprehensive case management and social support services for foster care children and their families. Its original mission was to rebuild the Bedford-Stuyvesant community through the provision of family, foster care and adoption services that would strengthen the community and family unit and prevent children from re-entering the foster care system.
From its inception, Concord Family Services has consistently fulfilled that initial mission, successfully delivering services to over 1000 African-American, Caribbean and Latino children and families in Bedford Stuyvesant and the surrounding communities. Buoyed by that initial success, Concord committed itself to addressing the needs of the broader community and expanded its mission.
Concord Family Services’ new mission is to help create a supportive environment in which residents of Bedford-Stuyvesant can achieve and sustain family stability and obtain the skills that will assure their social and economic growth and self-sufficiency.
Services and Programs
In addition to its core foster care and adoption programs and in keeping with its new mission, Concord Family Services provides:
Post Adoptive Services
which prevent pre- and post-adoptions disturbances from occurring, reducing the need for foster care replacement
An intergenerational Computer Technology training program.
A Supervised Independent Living Program that provides adolescents with supervision and support while living in their own apartments.
The Youth Development Summer & After School Program (YDSAS), a year-round youth development program which serves as a deterrent to youth delinquency. It combines life skills training and workforce development with computer/technology and digital audio recording training to youth ages 6-21 years of age.
An 8-bed Community Residence for female children/adolescence with serious emotional disturbances.
For families at risk of having their children placed in foster care, there is a Preventative Services Program.
The Family Based Treatment Program – SERENITY – trains professional parents to care for adolescents with emotional difficulties who have been discharged from a hospital or residential setting but not yet ready to re-enter their family home.
The Job Readiness Program is for residents of East New York and Brownsville ages 12-21. They learn basic computer technology, typing skills, money management and conflict resolution and then assisted by a Job Developer in finding employment.
