The Rev. Dr. Gary V. Simpson, Senior Pastor
“I will not let you go, unless you bless me.”  Genesis 32:26

Much like Jacob of the Hebrew Scriptures who struggled with the Angel of the Lord all night long in this timeless story referenced above, Pastor Gary V. Simpson has been teaching the Concord Congregation that blessings are about holding on to God through the night.  To be blessed is to be held by God beyond struggles, the world’s turmoil and dry seasons.  To be blessed is to know Jesus as Friend and to
experience the healing power of holy friendships.  In 2007, Pastor Simpson set forth a bold, new vision for the Concord congregation -- A New Vision for a New Era:  “Creating a community of friends, witnessing for Christ.”

I no longer call you servants,
for the servants do not know what the master is doing…I call you friends.
John 15:15

(Authentic Worship & Excellent Service)

To be Friends of God means to ‘be-friend’ our community
Concord Church will invest its time and resources on the call to change and transform people’s lives.
(Building up Social Justice & Caring Ministries)

To be Friends of God requires us to care deeply for the disciples of Jesus Christ and to share the Good News with the world!
Concord Church will work to edify and build up the Body of Christ, to care for each other in ways that make the difference.  With boldness, we will open our doors to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
(Discipleship & Evangelism)

To be Friends of God means to be prepared and ready to answer God’s call to service
Concord Church will develop and equip new leaders to serve this present age and prepare the next generation for discipleship.
(Leadership Development)

To be Friends of God requires us to cultivate a place of refuge for each other
Concord Church will steward a sacred and special place – our church home — as a place for transformational worship, hospitable refuge, holy service, the liberating fellowship of friends, and place of peace.
(Capital, Physical & Resource Development)

His vision of what it means to be a Friend of God has led our congregation to tithe our own giving to witness to the Kingdom of God; to partner with such organizations as the Micah Challenge, a global Christian campaign to eradicate poverty; and Habitat for Humanity to ensure decent homes to the poor.  This vision has led our congregation to give generous support to hurricane victims in North Carolina, Louisiana, Mississippi, and to the Tsunami victims in the Philippine Islands.  The vision of what it means to be a friend of Jesus has compelled him to stand with the United Federation of Teachers as they demonstrated for better wages, smaller classroom sizes, and special programs; and with Security Guards at the Empire State Building in their efforts to obtain decent wages and health insurance.

At the core of A New Vision for a New Era is a deep and abiding love for God’s people. If you are looking for a community where you will be led to worship God fully, serve with joy and make a difference in the world – come and find out more about what it means to be a friend of Jesus Christ.

Being a friend to God requires us to pursue excellent and authentic worship.  Worship is not just what we do in the sanctuary — it is also a disposition toward God in our total life.   Worship is the place we give to God in all that we do.
